Four University of Port Harcourt students have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The alleged students, Prince Hyacinth, Rex Emadifie Oghene, Odili Ifeanyi and Uduak Williams were arrested by the EFCC officials at their place of residence at Chibiak Avenue, Elioparanwo, Ada George, Port Harcourt.
It was reported that the suspects allegedly defrauded 15 victims a total of $111,500 which is equivalent to N43,104,785.
According to a statement by the Public Affairs Department of the EFCC, Port Harcourt zone, the following items were recovered from the suspects; one Tecno Spark 4, one iPhone 11 Pro Max, two Infinix Hot and one Apple laptop, one iPhone 7 and two iPhone 11, one iPhone 8+, one Acer laptop and one HP laptop.
Upon interrogation, one of the suspects, Prince Hyacinth, admitted to have paraded himself as a Spain-based marine engineer to lure his victims.
Rex Emadifie Oghene on the other hand also admitted to have posed as a rig engineer based in the United States.
Odili Ifeanyi and Uduak Williams also paraded themselves as marine engineers to swindle their victims.
While reacting to the news, the spokesman for the University of Port Harcourt, Sam Kpenu, denied claims that the suspects were students of the institution.
