Super Falcons’ captain Asisat Oshoala has come out to say that, the cancellation of the African Women Cup of Nation (AWCON) is like taking five steps forward and 20 or 10 steps backward.

She said this in an interview on instagram live with BBC broadcaster Mimi Fawaz.

On Tuesday June 30, 2020 Confederation of African Football (CAF) held an executive meeting via video-conference were this decision was taken.

According to the official statement released by CAF on their website www.cafonline.com after the meeting, the statement reads “Due to challenging conditions, the 2020 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been cancelled”

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the current champions of African
Women Cup of Nation (AWCON) after they beat South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 4-3 on penalties with regulation time ending goaless in the 2018 edition.

The Falcons are the most successful women national team on the African continent with ninth AWCON tittle since it inception in 1991.
