Olivier Giroud’s header was all Chelsea needed to strengthen their Champions League spot and claim a 1-0 victory over already relegated Norwich City at Stamford Bridge last night.
Christan Pulisic put in a great cross from the left flank of attack and Olivier Giroud was at the right position, he perfectly heads the ball straight into the back of the net in the three minutes (45+3) of added time in the first half.
Giroud who won the “MAN OF THE MATCH” tells Sky Sports after the match that: “We needed to be patient, and play our game, moving the ball quick against a team who played with a deep block. We created a lot of chances but it was important to score before half-time.
“We should’ve scored more goals but I think the team was a bit under pressure as we know we needed to win. We’re happy but I did miss a couple of chances. I tried to just stay focus and I managed to anticipate the cross from Christian.
“I always work hard and I always believe. I’m very pleased with the goal to help the team win this game. We really wanted to bounce back after the defeat to Sheffield United. We made mistakes in that game so we just tried to not do that again.
“The focus and the determination in the side tonight was very high and the most important thing is the three points.”
Chelsea made five changes from the side beaten at Sheffield United, including a return for Olivier Giroud and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to the starting line-up.
Chelsea will face Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley on Sunday at 6pm. Then they travel to Anfield to play Liverpool next Wednesday at 8.15pm, before facing Wolves on the final day of the season on July 26, in what may yet prove a straight race for a Champions League spot.
