26-day old twins were hacked to death by a family dog when their mother left the room to talk to a neighbour briefly.
The unfortunate incident took place last week Tuesday in their home in Piripá, in the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil.
The 29-year old mother Elaine Novais, who had struggled to give birth for nine years, rushed to their aid upon hearing the screams of her girls, Anne and Analú, but was too late to save them.
First aid were performed on the twins by a Nurse, with one dying instantly and the other who died after a cardiac arrest in Maria Pedreira Barbosa Municipal Hospital.
It was believed that the dogs, a Labrador and American foxhound cross, were jealous as they were not given attention since the birth of the twins.
The council of Piripá,with a population of 1000 made a statement on social media which read;
In the face of this immeasurable loss, we express our condolences and sympathy with parents Elaine and Regis, and their friends and family in this moment of sadness and pain.
‘May God comfort your hearts and give you the strength to transform all the pain of this irreparable loss into faith and hope.’
Mrs Novais and her husband Regis, 32, had struggled for nine years to have children.
Mrs Novais was sedated at the hospital after collapsing from shock.
The twin babies reportedly died one day before their due date, after arriving prematurely.
